3 Out of This World Summer Treats

Summertime is family time for many parents and children around the globe. Finding activities to do together can pose a challenge, but there are plenty of ways to make summer fun for the whole family without having to plan an extravagant vacation or zap your family’s budget.

One of my family’s favorite things to do together is cook, whether it’s an entrée, side item, dessert, or a bedtime snack. When everyone cooks together, kids are less likely to turn their nose up at the food on their plate, and it’s a great opportunity to teach basic kitchen safety rules like handwashing and age-appropriate kitchen chores.

Here are a few out-of-this-world treats you can make with your family. The best part is that they’re healthier than sugary cakes and candies!

Star Cheese Treats

Star cheese treats

Star Cheese – These are so easy that family members of all ages can help make them. All you need is astar-shaped cookie cutter, and cheese slices. Save the excess cheese for tiny sandwiches like sliders or for recipes that call for melted cheese. You could also add hard-boiled egg planets and bacon rockets for breakfast or use the star-shaped cookie cutter to cut stars out of grilled cheese sandwiches.

Marshmallow & Pretzel Constellations Treats

Marshmellow and Pretzel treats

2. Marshmallow & Pretzel Constellations – This recipe calls for two ingredients – mini-marshmallows and pretzel sticks. Once you have those, stick pretzels into the marshmallows to recreate your favorite constellations, or create new ones! For a fun twist, look for mini-marshmallows in your family’s favorite colors, or have a constellation contest to see who can create the biggest, the one with the most unique name, and other accolades.

Moon and Stars Salad

Fruit Moon Salad

3. Moon and Stars Salad – This recipe is so much fun and can be enjoyed during any meal of the day or for a snack. All you need is starfruit and fruit that can be cut into round slices (like bananas and kiwi) or crescents (such as mandarin orange or apple slices) and berries. Serve the ingredients in individual bowls in the center of the table or kitchen island and encourage your family members to make their own delicious universe. Be sure to add berry meteorites and a whipped cream constellation.
